3 Reasons It’s Time for a New Mattress
Nobody wants to sleep poorly (or not at all), so It’s always a good idea to check the condition of your mattress, so that you can look forward to some good sleep during the days ahead. It’s not a good idea to use your mattress warranty as a guide for determining when it should be replaced, because this can be quite misleading. This is because all those materials on top of your spring core will wear out a lot sooner than the springs themselves.
The mattress industry considers the softening or sagging of upper layers of a mattress to be normal wear, but when you’re talking about your own comfort, you may disagree with the industry experts, and decide that your comfort dictates a sooner replacement of the mattress than the warranty might recommend. Here are three of the most significant indicators that you might need to replace your old mattress.
Age of your mattress
One of the first things you should consider when trying to decide about replacing your mattress, is its age. If your mattress is older than eight years, you should be looking closely at it for signs of wear and tear, and you should pay attention to the level of comfort you feel when sleeping at night. Industry experts recommend replacing a mattress every 7 to 10 years, even if your warranty says that it should last for 20 years.
Keep in mind that warranties are intended to cover components of the mattress such as its springs, and the workmanship of its construction. The warranty does not address the overall level of comfort delivered by a mattress, and that’s the main reason you can’t rely on warranty recommendations when you’re thinking about mattress replacement.
You wake up feeling tired
Assuming you have no health issues, you should always wake up feeling rested and refreshed from a good night’s sleep. If you reach the point where you wake up every day and you still feel tired, and that you find yourself drowsy during the day, it could be that you been tossing and turning for much of the night.
When the comfort level begins to dip on a mattress, it happens quite often that people will unconsciously be forced to seek a more comfortable position while sleeping, and simply won’t be able to find that position. If your mattress has become too worn out, there may be no comfortable spot whatsoever on it, so you’ll be tossing and turning in vain all night long.
Noticeable sagging or impressions
When you wake up and you feel pain and stiffness in your back muscles or in your joints, you should visually inspect the mattress for signs of body impressions or sagging. Sagging will usually occur when the springs begin to break down and lose their resiliency. This will allow impressions to occur, because the foam, felt, and polyester fiber may all be subject to compression while you are laying on top of the mattress.
Health experts verify that any impressions or sagging on your mattress which are no more than 1-1/2 inches in depth can cause all kinds of aches and pains while sleeping and afterward. If you notice any signs of sagging which are at this depth or greater, it’s probably time for you to start looking for a new mattress. There’s really no substitute for a good night’s sleep, and when you wake up with aches and pains attributable to your aging mattress, it’s simply not worth the grief you have to put up with. Your health is far more important than the money it would cost you to invest in a new, comfortable mattress.
